Hello Marcus,
do you know more about the reasons for this crane accident, than written in the newspaper link? It seems to be quite often, that a luffing jib crane boom flips over to the rear and crashs down. In a issue of the "International Cranes", they wrote about the investigation results of a accident happened in London with a luffing jib crane.
The investigation gave the following steps, which lead to the crash: The driver lifted a very light load near to the tower, so the boom was in a near to vertical position. He slew the crane in a position, were the wind comes from the front a the wind load held the boom up against the booms own weight. The driver tries to lower the boom an unwinds the luffing rope, but the wind works against that movement. The rope unwinds further and a slack rope wind hangs from the crane. The driver slews aout of the wind and the boom falls down into the slack luffing rope, which leads to overloading of the boom structure and a shock load, which crashed the boom.
Here in this case, it seems that shock loads in combination with wind leads to overload the boom stops and flips it over the rear.
The recovery operations looks quite interesting but dangerous, because all work has to be done from the man basket.
