Walter had a Mitchigan crane, the same crane was made under licence in the UK by Allen of Oxford, called a K52,here are a couple of pictures of Allen /Mitchigan cranes from the Walter Woolfenden collection of pictures.

Hello, something slightly different this time,While Walter usually sent his cranes to other vehicles in distress, this time it was the other way round.
One of Walter Woolfendens Lorain cranes was not prepared properly for road transit and subsiquently struck an overhead road sign causing considerible disruption, here are the results.

Hi Simon, there are loads still to post, I am glad that you are enjoying them along with everyone else that take a look at this thread.
If you get fed up waiting you can tate a look at my photostream, there are probably about 1000+ pictures on cranes there.

Hello again, Walter had two Pettibone cranes that were amongst the smallest in the fleet, they were used for diverse operations and were quite often tied up on long term contracts, here are a couple of pictures.

Walter Woolfenden use to buy alot of equipment at auction and then refurbish the equipment to his own high standards, here are a couple of pictures of restorations in progress.

Hi Graham,

The Design of the "Oberwagen" or "Drehbühne" from the K52 (the first pic from Post 050) looks like a "puppet house" or so ... so many nice windows. :-)

Hi Andre, I agree, the crane on the K52 is a very strange design, the photo below the one you mentioned is slightly different in window design, slightly cleaner in design with less panels.
Walter was trying to sell the crane in the second photo so he took it to one of the auctions at either Ruddington or Burtonwood, on the back of a trailer, it wasen't in the auction but Walter still managed to sell the crane while he was there bidding for more equipment.

Hello. one of the things that always amaze me when I look at some of these old photo's, is the total lack of safe working distances aruond the various lifts that were taking place, between the actual lifts and casual passes by, here is a good example, life is continuing as normal directly behind the crane, not to mention the boys sat on the wall watching with intrest.

Even in the late 70's and early 80's safety wasn't much of an issue.
This picture illustrates this very nicely, showing a Gottwald crane operating in a shopping street.
A sign "Mind your head" would be appropriate at least.

Yes, thats right. I experienced that myself (sorry for my bad english!) while the building-up of a big Liebherr lattice boom crane with a telescopic crane in Hannover in the 80s: Everyone could struggle between the cranes, it was a very interesting costruction site ... suddenly the telescopic crane nearly tipped over cause one of the "Abstützungen?!" (i don´t know the translation) brakes through an sewage-channel under the street. Good luck, nothing serious happened.

By the way: whats about the safety and trustworthy of the old machines you show us graham? Are there a lot of accidents?

I have no idear what happened in this accident, or wheather it was one of Walter Woolfendens cranes that was involved.

Hello again, some really early pictures of Walter Woolfenden cranes this time. Walter got into cranes almost by accident. he had a 50% stake in a garage in Liverpool and was asked one day if he could lift something for a customer, the rest as they say is history.

Hello once again, time for Walter Woolfendens big Lorain MC 875. Rated at 75 tons, by todays standards it really does not sound much to get exicited about, but in 1962 this really was a big machine.I hope I have not posted these before.
