Hi Graham, thanks for the response, yes the photo above is the one mentioned. I found it great with the contrast of the rather modern concrete bridge (modern in term of technology...nowadays bridges are made with similar technology, but with better materials) and oldsytle cranes with no hydraulics.

Walter had 3 Lorain MC530's in his fleet below is a selection of pictures, all the pictures are cranes that ended up in the fleet.
There are a couple of pictures taken in America, when Walter was trying to purchase them.

hello
Here are a few pictures of Walter woolfendens Coles cranes. The pictures are in no particular order, but the first one is intresting in that it was after Hewden Stuart had bought walter Woolfenden and Walters cranes were in Hewden Stuart livery.
Walter Woolfenden is the gentleman standing on the left of this group.
All of these pictures I am posting have come from my photostream on Flickr
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62532775@N03/

Ther are nearly 700 pictures connected to walter woolfenden that I have posted. I was very lucky to obtain most of Walters archive,
I hope you enjoy them, it is very rare to have so many photo's connected to one independant company.

Hello, this is Walters Lorain MC875 before he aquired it, It was bought from Jack Hardwick who operated it from new for about a couple of years. Walter expressed an intrest in the crane and Jack decided to sell it.
This is the very first job the crane performed on arrival in the UK. at this point in the cranes life it only had one cab, I will try to post them in the correct order

This last picture is the MC875 after Hewden Stuart had discarded the crane and it was awaiting a new owner
All of these pictures are in my Photostream, all information will be connected to each photo

The Lorain MC875 was a big machine for it's time and being very wide made the crane an ideal platform for lifting, as it was very stable.
There were only four of these machines in the UK.
Fairclough x 2
Jack Hardwick x 1......(Crane that Walter Woolfenden bought)
Sparrows x 1

Here is a link to the Sparrows machine
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62532775@N03/5730732253/in/set-72157626854285493

The true size of these cranes can be judged by the size comparrison to a support van in the following picture.

Which one was wider.....The Lorain MC875 or the Coles Colossus?

Really impressive machines both.

Cheers

Zitat:
graham newell postete The next picture of the Colossus is a great photo of the true width of the vehicle. the width of the machine was probably one of it's major drawbacks in attracting customers

Hi Hendrik,
Now there's an intresting question, as far as I can tell with the info at hand

Coles Colossus ................11ft 9 3/4ins over chassis
Lorain MC 875/824............11ft 8 ins.....over chassis, but with catwalks and siderails this increases to ..12ft 10 ins, an incredible diamention.

Of intrest how do the early Gottwalds compair, they were also very wide, I have no info at hand for these.
Cheers
Graham

Hi Simon,
Glad you like them, it makes it all the more rewarding knowing that they are being appreciated, they are a really special set of photographs and quite probably unique as a UK company history spanning so many years.
Walter Woolfenden spent alot of time and effort documenting all aspects of his company.
Regards
Graham

To the best of my knowledge, the Gottwald MK1000/MK1500 was 3.30m wide, which translates to 10ft 10in.
Later Gottwald large cranes (AK850-103, AK912-103, AMK 1000-103,...) were all 3.00m (9ft 10in) in width.

Regards,

Sebastian

At least this was the width of the upper structure....the carrier was only at 3 m.

I guess the widest Gottwald with public road homologation was the AK 250 from 1968. The width was 3.5 m, and it had twin tyres on all axles, just like the Colossus and the Lorain. Here's the picture of the BCHC unit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/a-l-e-s/4257436763/ There were not too much produced, I think only 3 or 4 units. This one is the unit in Malta:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/62532775@N03/6919878238/

There were even wider mobile cranes available, from Gottwald, Krupp, Liebherr, but these were purely for off-highway purposes (mine sites etc.).

best regards, hendrik

Walter Woolfenden cranes went to the aid of quite a few accidents, sometimes it was to help others and sometimes it was to help with his own cranes that had got into a spot of trouble, here are some pictures

hello again, as a fan of the big machines, i think the big guns from Walters fleet are the order of the day, here are a couple of pictures again demonstraiting the shear size of the Lorain MC824 & MC875, lets not forget that in travelling order these machines were over 60 tons in weight, on only 3 axles.

Hello again, Walter Woolfenden was always in or around Liverpool docks. Sometimes he was loading cargo in or off ships and sometimes his cranes were just passing through in transit. here are a few pictures.
