why would anybody ever order a crane with shorter boom when you could have it with double the boom, weight is not an issue for you guys in Europe as you can drive with boom on, in front of the crane with the hook block on.... and extra 34t couldnt really be the difference could it?

Weight is an issue here in Europe (mainland Europe). It is only in the UK, that the LTM1500 can travel with the full 84 meter boom.

The 50 meter or 84 meter boom debate is relevant for each buyer of the LTM1500, but I know that BMS chose the 50 meter boom, since (in their opinion) the required time to add the extra telescopic sections was equal to the required time to add 35 meters of fixed jib. And since they was going to buy the fixed jib anyway, it couldn't justify the extra cost for the 84 meter boom.

As Kristoffer pointed out already, weight is an issue in (mainland) Europe. (However, limitations and regulations are a lot less complicated than in North America. )

Weight limitations in Europe - as far as cranes, heavy haulage an the like is concerned - basically come down to the rule "12 metric tons per axle". (Reminder: 12t = 12000kg ~= 26455lb)

However, a Liebherr LTM 1500 with the short 50m boom just barely keeps this limit when it is almost "stripped down": For example the boom guy and the hook block have the removed. (The later also for better visibility for the driver.)

So yes, the extra 34t of the full 84m boom would make a difference, raising the load of each axle to hearty 16.25t (supposing an equal spread of the load on all axles).

This is why even in Europe, the overwhelming majority of LTM1500 operators choose the 50m version since they don't want to mess around with an additional transport for the top boom sections and (dis)assembly of the boom to and on each job site.

That's right. Sweden has the maximum 12t axle load so it can't travel with 84m mounted
We have a very few LTM 1500 in Sweden and currently none of them have 84m. Instead we choose to have a jib on it, since the Nordic Crane unit will mostly erect windmills, also they say the load moment is so bad with 84m . But I agree, it would be really cool with 84m.

One thing though when it would be useful with 84m (in countries that can take more than 12t axle load, of course) is if they are going to erect a 60m high towercrane and they already have the 84m mounted. Then it is faster to already have long boom, without need to have 3 trucks with jib parts following

Yay!

Havator's LTM 1500 8.1 in Gothenburg right now! Pictures are from yesterday, and I also drove the crane! Later I will make one or two videos with all the video clips that I filmed

Tomorrow I will see the crane in action doing some real lifting. They will close a road here in Gothenburg, so more action pics will come on sunday

These will be total 165t counterweight on the crane

No crane without comparing the size with me ;D I'm almost 1,80

Time to change hook

Yes, really great pics AIN_002! But i´m a bit disappointed, because of the colour of the crane! I really like the blue and yellow! It´s much more interesting than the standard yellow!

With kind regards

Andreas

Yesterday's pictures are here!

Arived to the place at 07.15 in the morning, not a single worker at the place

Time to dismantle the crane for moving it

LTM 1130 has arrived, that's the one that is about to load all the counterweights etc on trailers. I got to borrow gloves, and I was "working for them" with fastening the straps of the things that would be lifted on the trailers As "award", Havator paid my food when we ate in restaurant

Time to fold the legs!

The hook is really big, we almost couldn't get it above the ground!

Now it's time to move the crane. It will stand a bit away from where it was before (in the first pictures). We drove out to the highway, drove a bit and then turned to drive back where it will stay. The cab really had much space and good sight inside, but the road didn't .

Who is this?

Back again. Now it's time to put the gloves on, for loading on the trailers.

Here it is, in the middle of the closed highway!

King of the road

While the work with cutting of the bridge was going on, a beam fell down throguth the bridge, landed with on of the ends on the ground and then came to rest on the cab. The beacon could be pushed back again, but the beam caused some heavy scratches on the edge of the cab's roof. Also if you take a look at the left window, you see they have used tape to fasten a plastic glass-plate, that's because some days ago (in the night) some fu*kers crushed the window and stole the communication radio. D*MN!

LTM 1130 has arrived - reversing!

That one will also have full counterweight

Time to mount the counterweights on the LTM 1500!

Time to prepare the superlift

The CW's are mounted!

The 50m long boom is almost fully extended. All extension are going to be 100% extended

Fully extended!

The orange straps takes 25t each

The lift will soon begin!

The straps are fastened!

Yay! The bridge part is lifted off. You can also see the wires from the superlift to the boomhead is tensed (compare with the picture above)

The best of all pictures!

The bridge weights about 45t

The sidewalk is about to be taken off.

Bye to the cranes and the Havator workers

If I'm not mistaken, then the Scania is ex-G.A. Schackts Specialtransporter and it used to be a 5 axle truck.

Where did the lift take place? I cannot really id the place...

EDIT - just found it on Google maps... it's E20 close to the intersection with E6... A real crappy place to drive during rush-hour...

The crane was standing on the road, E20 at (as you see in the pic) the trainbridge in Olskroken

And about the truck, yes it was owned by another company before. I got an e-mail some time ago from a Czech guy named Jaroslav Vorechovsky, the e-mail contained three pics of the truck when it was owned by another company in 2006, before Havator bought it
