Times of India:
3 cranes fall, Metro image takes beating
/quote/ The four cranes, with a capacity to lift 400 tonnes, 350 tonnes, 250 tonnes and 250 tonnes each, started lifting the 200-tonne mass when the boom of one of the cranes in the middle developed cracks and it snapped. With this, the weight of the launcher, according to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, got shifted to the other cranes. Of these, the first one broke and the second overturned, bringing down the launcher with it. In a matter of seconds, there was chaos.
The collapse led to complete panic at the site as over 100 labourers and engineers had a narrow escape. The operators of the cranes also managed to jump out in time. Bystanders, including this correspondent who was barely a few metres away from the rescue site, ran to safety as the launcher came down and the massive crane overturned causing the ground to shake. Six labourers standing nearby suffered minor injuries and were rushed to AIIMS trauma centre for first aid even as the area was evacuated.
To clear out the mess, six more cranes were called in from other Metro construction sites. The 400-tonne crane that was unaffected by the collapse was wheeled out of the site while the other cranes lifted the toppled one and the broken parts of the other cranes. Simultaneously, gas cutters were used to cut the launcher which had fallen on the ground. /endquote/
