graham newell postete Some of the jacking points were altered as well, the front position use to be under the cab, but on the production models they were moved. They ended up between the first and second axles.

Have a look: Both the Bermuda machine and the Hobart machine still has them under the cab.......It seems that only for White, Senn, and Stewart they were moved between the axles.

Best regards, Hendrik

Hi Hendrik,
Thats an intresting observation, as both of those machines were the ones designated as port towers.
One of the other intresting notes on the Colossus, is that as far as I know all the machines were slightly different, no two machines were the same.
With only 5 machines built they never got into their stride with options and variables

Best regards
Graham

Hello Hendrik.
I have just noticed something odd about the intended Sparrows machine that I had not noticed before, all of the pictures of the Sparrows machine are showing it with left hand drive, but when the crane was eventually sold to J.D.White it was right hand drive.
With that in mind I wonder why Sparrows wanted a left hand drive machine, do you think that Sparrows intended the crane to work overseas and not in the UK at all.
Here is yet another picture of the Sparrows machine, as a left hand drive crane ?

Well spotted Graham...

The only left hand drive crane that really made sense was the Senn machine. All the other cranes including the Bermuda machine and the Tasmania machine should have been right steer......BUT: One of the actual Pakistan machine is left hand drive, too, AND has got the front jacks under the cab and is therefore NOT the ex Senn machine! So there were at least two left hand drives...

cheers, hendrik

The below link from Switzerland indicates that the Senn machine was equipped with two Cummins engines (335 HP/500 HP) and not Rolls Royce:

Hi Hendrik.
I have just had a look at the link and you are right, another great find.

I have been studying the photo's of the various machines and noticed that the one in Pakistan that is red and white in colour that is posted in this thread has the same front jacking point as the Bermuda crane. It is not under the cab, but directly behind the cab, but infront of the first axle.
Best regards
Graham

Hi Hendrik.
I have also noticed that the Senn AG machine and the one that Buz posted in this thread are the same crane as they are the only pictures that show long boxes on the top of the main running beam.
This to me would confirm that the Bermuda crane is the red and white crane in Pakistan, which is left hand drive.
This also means that the two cranes in Pakistan are both left hand drive
Best regards
graham

Hi Graham,

I would totally agree if there wasn't this picture where I think this crane isn't a left hand drive.....if it was you'ld probably spot a steering wheel!? http://www.flickr.com/photos/64938323@N07/6811318347/ Also the guard rail (hand rail) around the upper cab is somehow different from the red and white Pakistani. (Just indications though.....very difficult to tell the truth from 1 or 2 pictures.)

Hi Hendrik,
Yes I totally agree about the steering wheel. There is also another difference I have just spotted, the outrigger feet on the Bermuda crane are square in shape and the Pakistan crane has round outrigger feet
Best regards
Graham

Great pictures Arie, is this the machine that you were offered from Bermuda and now in Pakistan.
Am I right in understanding that Sindorf made a few modifications to the machine.
Many thanks for posting these pictures Arie, I knew Sindorf had one of the beasts, but I have never seen any pictures until now.

One last question if I may Arie, did this machine ever have the extra seventh axle, as it looks as though Sindorf did not have it.?
Kind regards
Graham

Bermuda -> Sindorf -> Santana Cazorla -> Pakistan, or
Bermuda -> Santana Cazorla -> Sindorf -> Pakistan?

Does anyone have a picture of this crane in Pakistan? This ugly cabin is really characteristic.

Hi Hendrik.
I would say the first option.
Bermuda->Sindorf->Santana Cazorla->Pakistan, From what information has been presented to this amazing thread.
I have been told by a good friend of mine that this machine in Pakistan is not in the best of shapes and by looking at the photo from Santana Cazorla I can understand why

1971: The 170 ton Colossus crane had a special 6 point outrigger configuration with only 2 main outriggers mounted between the 3rd and 4th axle. This first unit was built for Sparrows (GB) and had LHD.

1972: The 200 ton Colossus cranes had an 8 point outrigger configuration with the front outriggers mounted between the first and second axle and 4 main outriggers.
From this version I have so far seen only three:
- J.D. White (GB)
- Hewden-Stuart (GB)
- Senn (CH)

1973: The 250 ton Colossus cranes had the new 8 point outrigger configuration with the front outriggers just behind the lower cabin.
From this version I have sofar seen four:
- Muyammad Aslam (Pakistan)
- Boom (AUS) > Bridge & Marine (AUS)
- Manchester Liners (GB)
- 1976 Port of Hobart (Bermuda)

Hopefully somebody can solve the puzzle.

I think I saw this on a picture but really wasn't sure about it....I got confused. Thanks for clarification!

According to what we learned so far, the White machine is the reworked Sparrows machine. Obviously it got a new carrier, and also RHD.

The Boom machine is the former Port of Hobart (Tasmania) machine, and it is from 1975. The Manchester Liners is the Bermuda machine (as you correctly state one posting before). I assume it was working in the port of Hamilton but so far there isn't any evidence at all.

cheers
