thank you for posting your pictures of the russian KB-403B and special thanks for the detailed views of the bottom climbing system and the tower fixation during normal service.

For me, it is always interesting to see such bottom slewing monsters.

Hello Amuse,

thank you for posting these pictures of the KB-515 and the detailed views of the climbing system - now it is clear for my, what you showed on a Liebherr picture and your answer on my question.

Is this crane still a bottom climber? For me, the blue part looks like a top climbing cage, which is only for storage on the tower base and will be raised to the top, when in use for inserting the next tower element.

Also interesting to see the small swingable lift arm below the rear guy lever for lifting the tower elements (your last picture). How is the assembling sequence of this crane type? Is the tower climbed to the desired height at first and the boom is raised to the horizontal working position as the last step? So the boom hangs vertical down during tower climbing?

Hello Kim,

I think, the KB-515 bottom slewing tower crane is not a complete self erector and needs a little bit help from an assist (truck) crane, but look at Posting No. 005 in this thread:
The crane there is definitly self erecting (OK, it is a smaller one than the KB-515 in Amuse´s Postings).
In former times, when these bottom slewing monsters were developed and in regular service building large living blocs, the available assist cranes were very small, most of them truck mounted telescopic cranes on 3 axle chassis (15t to 25t lifting capacity) - so no comparison to modern day AT-cranes.

Please also look at my Posting No. 26 in another thread for russian tower cranes. I posted some links to Youtube-films showing the self erecting process of comparable tower cranes.

as you can see (at the end of the movie), the climbing section can be lowered or raised separately. Furthermore it is used lift the cabine.

your fotos about the climbing mechanism are quite interesting - thanks a lot!

As the crane has no bottom luffing gear for it´s jib the crane must be set up in the final configuration/level in the beginning, when erected? to add additional tower sections during operation at the construction site does not seem to make sense, right?

It´s more like small/medium fast erection cranes, where you need to decide about the final tower configuration in the beginning, not like climbing with the building as it grows.

Maybe I am wrong and have overseen something?

Increase the height of the tower can be at any time.
But for this you need to remove the cockpit and lower the boom.
